“Free” means two very different things on PS5, and the difference matters. Some games are free-to-play<\/strong> \u2014 download them and play forever, no subscription needed. Others are PlayStation Plus monthly games<\/strong>, which are included with a membership but stop working if that membership lapses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PlayStation Plus monthly games: September 2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sony announced four titles this month rather than the usual three. They are claimable from Tuesday 1 September<\/strong> until Monday 5 October 2026<\/strong>, and are available on every PlayStation Plus tier including Essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sniper Elite: Resistance<\/h3>

Rebellion \u00b7 Tactical shooter \u00b7 PS5 and PS4<\/p>

Long-range, methodical shooting with the series\u2019 signature slow-motion kill cam. Set in wartime France, and playable solo or in co-op.<\/p><\/div>

MLB The Show 26<\/h3>

San Diego Studio \u00b7 Sports \u00b7 PS5<\/p>

The current-year baseball simulation, and the standout of the four if you follow the sport. PS Plus members also get the Jump Start Bundle \u2014 five Show Packs, an Equipment Pack and the Jumpstart Choice Pack \u2014 claimable from 1 September to 6 October.<\/p><\/div>

Wobbly Life<\/h3>

RubberBand Games \u00b7 Sandbox party game \u00b7 PS5 and PS4<\/p>

A deliberately silly open-world sandbox built around jobs and physics-driven chaos. The pick here for playing with children or with friends who do not usually game.<\/p><\/div>

Chained Echoes<\/h3>

Matthias Linda \u00b7 Turn-based JRPG \u00b7 PS4<\/p>

A widely praised throwback to 16-bit era role-playing, made largely by one developer. Note it is the PS4 version \u2014 it plays on PS5 through backwards compatibility.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Claim them even if you will not play them now.<\/strong> Once claimed they stay in your library for as long as your membership stays active \u2014 but after 5 October you cannot go back and add them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Best free-to-play PS5 games (no subscription needed)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

These cost nothing to download and \u2014 importantly \u2014 none of them require PlayStation Plus to play online<\/strong>. Sony\u2019s own support pages confirm that most free-to-play titles are exempt from the membership requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fortnite<\/h3>

Also worth avoiding: several free games have shut down. XDefiant<\/strong>, MultiVersus<\/strong> and Concord<\/strong> are gone, and Destruction AllStars<\/strong> was delisted in May 2026 with servers closing in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In short: if you never want to pay a subscription, the free-to-play list above is genuinely, permanently free. PlayStation Plus is worth it for the monthly games and \u2014 on Extra and Premium \u2014 the catalogue of hundreds of full titles, but it is a rental, not ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You still need PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer in most paid<\/em> games. Sony puts it plainly: to play most PS4 and PS5 games in online multiplayer, you need a subscription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
