How these rankings are calculated
This is the part most ranking pages skip, so here it is plainly. EA publishes no depth chart. There is no field in the ratings data that says who starts. So “starters” here means each team’s highest rated players at each position, filled to a realistic personnel count.

Defense is counted as nickel — two linebackers and three corners — because that is the league’s most-played personnel group, and because three linebackers alongside three corners would put twelve men on the field.
This is a rating-strength measure, not a predicted lineup. A rookie rated above a veteran will appear in the notional starting unit whether or not he would actually start in week one. We would rather state the method than imply we know a depth chart EA has not published.
Starters versus full roster
The gap between the two views is the interesting bit. Ranking by top starters rewards star power; ranking by full roster rewards depth. A team that sits high on one and lower on the other is telling you something real about how it is built — and about what happens to it after an injury.
Full-roster averages are naturally much lower than starter averages, because they include every third-stringer and practice-squad-level player EA rated. Compare teams to each other within a view, not across the two views.

How are Madden 27 team ratings calculated here?
By averaging each team’s highest rated players at each position into a realistic personnel count: 11 on offense, 11 on defense as nickel, and 3 on special teams. The full-roster view averages every rated player on the team instead.
Is this EA’s official team rating?
No. EA rates players, not teams. These rankings are computed from those player ratings using the method described above, which is why we spell the method out.
Why is defense counted as nickel?
Because nickel — two linebackers and three cornerbacks — is the most-played personnel group in the modern NFL, and because three linebackers alongside three corners would field twelve players. Every team is measured the same way.
Does this predict who will start?
No. EA publishes no depth chart, so this cannot and does not predict a lineup. It measures rating strength by position.
