FC 27 Gameplay Changes: What EA Fixed After the Closed Beta
The EA SPORTS FC 27 closed beta produced a lot of feedback, and EA has now published what it changed as a result. Several of these are meaningful nerfs to tactics that dominated the beta — physical defending, Team Press and Lengthy players in particular.
Here is every change EA confirmed, what it actually means when you are playing, and the one piece of context that matters most for the opening weeks.
EA is not planning big balance patches at launch
This is the headline for anyone who remembers previous launch windows. EA says it does not plan to make significant gameplay balance changes in early title updates for FC 27. The reasoning: how a game is played changes quickly in the opening weeks as players learn mechanics and build squads, and EA would rather let the meta settle than react to early trends.
Bugs, unintended behaviours and issues significantly hurting the experience will still be fixed. EA notes those fixes can themselves shift balance — their example is that correcting an unintended goalkeeper behaviour inevitably affects the balance between shooting and goalkeeping — and says it will keep such changes as targeted as possible.
Bruiser and shoulder challenges nerfed
Physical play was one of the biggest talking points from the beta. Shoulder challenges stay viable, but EA has made them more consistent and closed off the way they were being abused.
The key change: repeatedly pressing shoulder challenge while chasing an opponent no longer works. Spamming the input in quick succession now makes your defender stick out an arm and lose speed, which actively punishes it. Shoulder challenges are most effective when you get side by side with the ball carrier rather than challenging from behind.
Strength still matters and the Bruiser PlayStyle still helps — but the extra benefit from Bruiser+ has been slightly reduced.
Team Press no longer works in your defensive third
Team Press was too effective close to your own goal, with AI teammates automatically closing down attackers and taking defensive responsibility away from the player. EA’s fix is blunt: Team Press now has no effect while the ball is in your defensive third.
Further up the pitch it still works, but defenders are now less effective at pressing than midfielders and forwards, and stepping towards their marked player leaves them more exposed to passes played in behind. There is a real trade-off attached to it now.
Defensive depth actually works
EA also addressed defensive lines sitting higher than the depth setting suggested. Lower depth settings are now more clearly reflected in how your line positions itself — defenders retreat sooner and hold a more conservative position, leaving less space in behind. Your line still reacts to the situation, so a low depth does not pin defenders deep in every phase.
AcceleRATE and the Lengthy nerf
Lengthy players were dominant in the beta, and EA has attacked that from three directions.
First, as announced in the gameplay deep dive, triggered runs now have a limited distance — you have to trigger another run to keep a player moving, which removes much of the advantage Lengthy players gained over long distances.
Second, the impact of AcceleRATE profiles on running performance has been slightly reduced, bringing Explosive, Controlled and Lengthy closer together and putting more weight on a player’s actual Acceleration and Sprint Speed attributes.
Third, the height threshold changed: in FC 27, female players need to be at least 5’8″ (172 cm) to be eligible for the Lengthy profile.
Player lock now carries real risk
Player lock was powerful with very little downside. In FC 27, when you lock onto a player away from the ball, the ball carrier no longer automatically dribbles around or avoids defenders — they simply keep moving in the direction they were already going.
EA has also slightly increased the passing error on CPU-controlled ball carriers during player lock. The defending player now gets a clear window to punish it, and the attacker has to stay aware of what is happening on the ball while controlling someone else.
Dinked passes are fully manual
Dinked passes are manual in FC 27, so where the ball goes is decided by where you aim rather than by which pass button you used. The beta also showed them triggering by accident from repeated ground pass presses.
The fix: dinked passes can no longer be performed with the ground pass input at all. Double-tapping or spamming ground pass now just gives you a regular ground pass. To play a dinked pass, double tap through pass and aim manually.
Player roles and attacking spatial awareness
A common question from the beta: does the new attacking spatial awareness system replace player roles? It does not — the two work together.
Player roles still determine which runs a player can make from their position and role: an inside forward looks for the channel between centre back and full back, a winger stays wider. Role familiarity — including Role+ and Role++ — determines the urgency with which they make those runs. Attacking spatial awareness then influences the movement on top of that.
What is actually new about corners
FC 26 already let you control a player in the box, so the difference in FC 27 is the amount of assistance you get — namely, none. Your player is no longer moved towards the ball’s expected landing position. Reading the trajectory, getting into position and timing the run are all on you.
Which player you pick matters more as a result: height and jumping change where and when you can attack the ball, and physical momentum means arriving at the right spot the right way. You can hold position with shielding, or use the new avoidance mechanic to slip past an opponent and reach the spot first.
Authentic Gameplay and CPU AI
CPU AI is getting targeted refinements rather than an overhaul, in line with EA’s cautious approach. Difficulty progression is being tuned to create clearer gaps between Professional, World Class and Legendary; certain CPU slider thresholds such as sliding tackle frequency are being recalibrated; and the AI is being adjusted in how it builds attacks, approaches 1v1 finishing chances, and defends against through passes and triggered runs.
What EA did not commit to yet
EA acknowledged receiving significant feedback on The Grounds, Clubs, Career Mode and Football Ultimate Team during the beta, and was candid that not all of it will be addressed at launch — improvements will come in future title updates. A separate Football Ultimate Team launch update deep dive is still to come.
On the PC side, the full four-tier specification sheet is broken down in our FC 27 PC requirements guide, and the reworked bindings — including the new player lock and power shot combos — are in the keyboard controls guide.
FC 27 FAQ
Will EA patch FC 27 gameplay right after launch?
Not with significant balance changes. EA has said it does not plan major gameplay balance updates in early title updates, preferring to let the meta settle. Bugs and unintended behaviours will still be fixed, as targeted as possible.
Was Bruiser nerfed in FC 27?
Yes. The extra benefit from Bruiser+ has been slightly reduced, and repeatedly pressing shoulder challenge while chasing now makes your defender stick out an arm and lose speed instead of eventually winning the ball.
Why does Team Press not work in FC 27?
It has no effect while the ball is in your own defensive third — a deliberate change so the player takes responsibility for pressing near their own goal. Higher up the pitch it still works, but defenders press less effectively than midfielders and forwards.
Were Lengthy players nerfed in FC 27?
Yes, in three ways: triggered runs now have a limited distance, the impact of AcceleRATE profiles on running performance has been slightly reduced, and female players now need to be at least 5’8″ (172 cm) to be eligible for Lengthy.
How do you do a dinked pass in FC 27?
Double tap through pass and aim manually. Dinked passes can no longer be triggered with the ground pass input at all — repeatedly pressing ground pass now gives a regular ground pass.
When does FC 27 come out?
Worldwide launch is 25 September 2026, with up to seven days of early access through the Ultimate Edition and Ultimate Plus Edition, starting 18 September 2026.
