“Free” means two very different things on PS5, and the difference matters. Some games are free-to-play — download them and play forever, no subscription needed. Others are PlayStation Plus monthly games, which are included with a membership but stop working if that membership lapses.

PlayStation Plus monthly games: September 2026
Sony announced four titles this month rather than the usual three. They are claimable from Tuesday 1 September until Monday 5 October 2026, and are available on every PlayStation Plus tier including Essential.
Sniper Elite: Resistance
Rebellion · Tactical shooter · PS5 and PS4
Long-range, methodical shooting with the series’ signature slow-motion kill cam. Set in wartime France, and playable solo or in co-op.
MLB The Show 26
San Diego Studio · Sports · PS5
The current-year baseball simulation, and the standout of the four if you follow the sport. PS Plus members also get the Jump Start Bundle — five Show Packs, an Equipment Pack and the Jumpstart Choice Pack — claimable from 1 September to 6 October.
Wobbly Life
RubberBand Games · Sandbox party game · PS5 and PS4
A deliberately silly open-world sandbox built around jobs and physics-driven chaos. The pick here for playing with children or with friends who do not usually game.
Chained Echoes
Matthias Linda · Turn-based JRPG · PS4
A widely praised throwback to 16-bit era role-playing, made largely by one developer. Note it is the PS4 version — it plays on PS5 through backwards compatibility.
Claim them even if you will not play them now. Once claimed they stay in your library for as long as your membership stays active — but after 5 October you cannot go back and add them.

Best free-to-play PS5 games (no subscription needed)
These cost nothing to download and — importantly — none of them require PlayStation Plus to play online. Sony’s own support pages confirm that most free-to-play titles are exempt from the membership requirement.
Fortnite
Epic Games · Battle royale · Runs at 120fps on PS5
Still the biggest free game on the platform, and it changes substantially every season. Monetised entirely through cosmetics and the battle pass — nothing you buy affects gameplay.

Free since 2020, runs at 120fps, and is one of the easiest games here to play with friends of any skill level. Cosmetics only.
Apex Legends

Fast, movement-heavy team shooter with the best gunplay of the free battle royales.

Over a decade of content, and famously generous — everything can be earned by playing. Substantially playable solo, so PS Plus is irrelevant to most of it.

The breakout hero shooter of the last two years, with destructible environments and a large Marvel roster. Season 9 begins 11 September 2026.

Blizzard · Hero shooter
The genre’s benchmark for character design and team play. PlayStation Plus is explicitly not required.

HoYoverse · Open-world action RPG
An enormous, beautiful open world you can play entirely solo for hundreds of hours. Monetised via gacha character pulls — treat that as optional and it costs nothing.

Mediatonic · Party platformer
Chaotic obstacle-course battle royale. The lightest, most family-friendly pick on this list.

The base game is free and there is a decade of it. Worth knowing: Bungie shipped its final major update in June 2026, so the game is no longer receiving new expansions — a lot of content, but not a growing one.

Games people think are free but are not
A few titles turn up on “free PS5 games” lists incorrectly. Saving you the search:

Also worth avoiding: several free games have shut down. XDefiant, MultiVersus and Concord are gone, and Destruction AllStars was delisted in May 2026 with servers closing in November.

In short: if you never want to pay a subscription, the free-to-play list above is genuinely, permanently free. PlayStation Plus is worth it for the monthly games and — on Extra and Premium — the catalogue of hundreds of full titles, but it is a rental, not ownership.
You still need PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer in most paid games. Sony puts it plainly: to play most PS4 and PS5 games in online multiplayer, you need a subscription.
